What to Wear for a British Summer
All imagery by Danny Qazi
My style is often described as being very ‘Italian’, inspired by my heritage (did my name give that away?) but truth be told, it’s a mish mash of two places. I spent my childhood and teenage summers between London, Surrey and Naples, reading books and magazines by the beach or by the river.
Now, my summers are spent in various places throughout Europe, but summertime in London is like no other. There are some downfalls - namely no beaches and no bikinis - but the city is full of outdoor spaces that buzz with excitement when the temperatures warm and the city comes alive. Riverside restaurants, rooftops, parks; there are countless places to enjoy the weather (read: reasons to take a day off for a staycation.) But there are also many places to enjoy just a short drive away, like the Cotswolds, Bath and Henley (the latter of which inspired the stripes on these DAKS trousers.)
Naturally, my wardrobe changes from destination to destination, but the theme remains the same: chic, classic pieces that I can put my own personal spin on. I build my wardrobe around key items, adding other elements such as vintage accessories and jewellery as I go. For SS18, DAKS collection was inspired by the British social season, but they’re pieces that fit my British and European wardrobes seamlessly. They’re the kind of wardrobe staples that I build around, whether it’s summer, winter or spring.
1. Striped Linen Trousers
I’ve been through many silhouettes throughout the years, but striped linen trousers are my go to throughout summer - they go with everything from t-shirts for a more casual look to blazers for occasions. Inspired by the Henley Regatta, DAKS partnered with Fox Brothers to create this elegant stripe (also available in blue) and pairing them with a pointed kitten heel mule creates a super flattering silhouette.

2. Neutral Blazer
Perhaps the most important piece of my summer outfit puzzle, an elegant blazer is the key to looking put together no matter the weather. I’ll team it with the striped trouser and heels to elevate the look, but it will be just as at home over jeans for lunch by the river.

My penchant for headscarves is perhaps where the Italian in me comes out to play, (summer issues of Italian Vogue would feature endless images of elegant women draped in silk scarves,) but they can elevate a look more quickly that any other accessory. There’s something beautifully nostalgic about a headscarf, yet it still feels very now.

4. Woven Accessories
For the city, I love pairing these tailored pieces with unexpected beach elements, such as a raffia bag, woven shoes or a straw hat.
An all-in-one is my go to piece for occasions throughout summer - they’re so easy to wear, yet I always feel so put together when I’m wearing one. I love the buckle detail and structural shape of this one from DAKS that I’ll be wearing all summer long.
