How to

What to wear to a winter wedding?

Whilst summer wedding attire can consist of a silky slip dress flung on with some sandals and a smile, a winter wedding can be a right conundrum. Too cold in the church? Too hot once you’ve had you fifth glass of champagne and the heating is blasting in your face? Heavy boots under a dress feel matronly but how to keep those un-pedicured toes hidden when all you seem to own is strappy sandals? We approach winter weddings the way we approach most sartorial situations: feet (bags and jewellery) first.

So, we a choose a simple dress or suit in a rich autumnal or jewel shade, maybe in a sumptuous fabric like satin or velvet and then we let the accessories do the talking. Winter weddings make us want to wear more hats and headpieces and headbands, oh my! They make us want to match our hat to our shoes or wear giant embellished earrings AND a matching diamante belt. And we approve of all the aforementioned over-accessorising. Just remember the one rule, if everything is matching maybe introduce one expected or quirky item into the mix. If everything is quite full on leave your hair un-styled or your make up simple. And most importantly enjoy feeling like a fifth avenue princess.

We choose to ignore the old saying that black is not appropriate for a wedding, especially when its a winter wedding and extra specially if its an evening wedding. Keep it chic in monochrome tones but go all out with the sparkle on your accessories.

We love an auburn shade in autumn (ok, all year round) and its the perfect tone for a crisp sunny wedding day. Mix in pastel accessories for an unexpected twist.

Winter weddings do make us want to dress a little bit festive. But reign in the reindeer antlers and instead choose a sumptuous palette of rich greens and reds perhaps with a little tartan thrown in.
